Content Actions and Tools

There are numerous actions that can be executed on content items through the various views of the content manager. Supplementing these actions are a separate set of tools and wizards for triggering more in-depth actions and manipulations of the targeted content.

Most actions and tools are available across all content item types (Model, Discover, Formulate, Tabulate, Present, Publish, and Illustrate), but there are a few that behave differently.

There is a separate set of actions and tools for folders - as distinct from normal content items - even though many are identical or similar in function and purpose. However, the folder actions are mainly available through the Content Explorer view only, where folder structures and the folder tree are readily accessible.

Accessing Content Actions

The various actions and tools available for content items can be accessed through the context menu for the item in all content views. The context menu can be accessed by right-clicking on an item or left-clicking the 3-point menu button (red arrow below) in all 3 types of item displays.

Separately, the advanced tools and wizards and more peripheral actions can also be accessed through the item's action panel. The action panel itself can be opened from the context menu, and will expose the wizards (green arrow below) and peripheral actions (yellow arrow) in its various panels.

Content Context Menu

The following table shows the functions on the context menu by content type. It highlights where the menu item is available (blue), where it's not available (gray), where it's only available for admins (yellow), and where it's conditionally available (green).

Description

Open

Opens the item. This is equivalent to a single click on the thumbnail or double clicking on the item in a list for all content types except Present. For Present dashboards, this opens the item into the Present editor for dashboard design and editing.

View

Launches a Present dashboard into "show mode" for immediate viewing. This is equivalent to a single click on the thumbnail or double clicking on the Present item in a list. The View will either launch the presentation directly or first take the user into the 'Presentation Launcher' first.

Maintenance Mode

This menu item opens a Discover item without executing the underlying query in 'maintenance mode'. This is useful for opening up problematic content and fixing its structure before running the underlying query against the target data source. Only admins can open Discover content in maintenance mode.

Go to Item Location

This menu item jumps to the selected items hierarchical location within the folder tree in the content explorer view. As such, the menu item is available in every content view in the content manager EXCEPT for the explorer view itself.

Copy

Copies the content item into memory, awaiting the next Paste step, so that is can be copied to a new destination. See Copy-Paste for more.

Cut

Starts the process of MOVING the selected items, by storing the item in memory, awaiting the next Paste step. This is the same as drag-and-drop, but with the convenience of not needing to handle the movements of the mouse. See Cut-Paste for more.

Delete

This (soft) deletes the item. The item is then hidden from view and can only be restored by admins.

Restore

This undeletes a previously deleted item. The item is brought back into full view for all users with access to the item. The menu item will only appear when selecting a previously soft-deleted item. Only admins can restore content.

Purge

This (hard) deletes the item. The item is fully REMOVED from the system and CANNOT be restored by admins. Only admins can purge content.

Rename

This is a simple prompt tool to rename the item. The user must have the right to "write" the change on the item back to the repository.

Add to Favorites

This adds the current content item to the user's favorites list, making it quicker and easier to find the content item in future sessions. If the item is already a favorite, the menu item changes to a "Remove from Favorites" action instead.

Actions

This is a collection of sub-menu items with more advanced item actions and tools. The menu item itself also opens the Actions Panel, where the user can drive other content related actions and tools. Many of these items are also accessible directly from the context menu as well.

Lineage

Shows an item's content lineage - detailing all the items that are nested in its structure 'downstream'. Alternatively, it can show all items that next the item itself 'upstream'. This does not apply to model definition items.

Open Related Content

Opens all other content items that are related to the currently selected item: 'downstream' items are those that are nested inside the current item; 'upstream' items are those that next the current item in their definition.

Change Description

This opens a dialog to let users add or change the description for that item.

Metadata

This opens the action panel and shows metadata details for the selected content item - including the item's system ID, thumbnail, create dates, description, ratings and data source. It also exposes several actions options like direct links, embed snippets, audit trail.

Versioning

This opens the content versioning panel for the currently selected item so the user can see any previous versions of the item that have been saved. Users can save multiple versions of any content built in Pyramid, and then access and edit those versions without losing them with newer updates.

Roles

This opens the roles panel for the currently selected item so the user can see the different levels of access for each role set for the item. Since role security can only be changed on Public domain items, this item will only be available on publicly shared items. Further, a user may not be able to change any of the role settings if they do not have management rights on the item or its parent folder (and usually both).

Schedule

This opens the schedules panel to allow users to add, view, edit, and manage schedules for Models and Publications - which both run tasked based activities that are generally scheduled to run. The schedules viewer also allows users to see the results of previously executed jobs from schedules, including the results of model processing and any rendered reports from publication jobs.

Subscription

This opens the schedules panel to allow users to add, view, edit, and manage subscription schedules for Discoveries and Presentations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Change Data Source

This runs the Data Source Changer (DSC) wizard on the item (and any related downstream items embedded in it). Use the DSC to switch the data sources that the content item is targeted at. This is not relevant for Model files.

Analyze Structure

This runs the Structure Analyzer wizard on the item (and any related downstream items embedded in it). Use the Structure Analyzer to check the structure of the item against the data source to check it has no mismatches or errors. This is not relevant for Model files.

Alerts

This opens the alerts panel to allow users to view, edit or manage alert jobs (and their schedules) attached to Discover and Present content. The alerts viewer also allows users to see the results of previously executed alert jobs.

Migrate Content

This runs the Migrate wizard on the item (and any related downstream items embedded in it). Use the Migrate wizard to move content from one instance of Pyramid to another.

Export

This manually exports the item (and any related downstream items embedded in it) into a "PIE" file, which can then be re-imported into another Pyramid instance.

Multi-Item Operations

Some content actions are operational if multiple items have been selected - allowing users to perform bulk activities on more than a single item at a time. After selecting multiple items, the context menu will adjust accordingly, showing the relevant tools, wizards, and actions. This includes many tools available through the action panel, even though the action panel itself is not accessible when multiple items are selected.
